IQ - Frequency (2009)

10 Puntos.

The world scene of Neoprogressive rock it's alive than ever, due to the production of new bands and of those acclaimed in this genre. In this last case bands as Marillion, Pendragon, and IQ just to say some examples, are still working and they`re editing works with more or less frecuency. "Happiness is the road" from Marillion, or "Pure" from Pendragon, were the last productions of these great british bands during 2008. Along IQ these bands were in 80's England the seed that allowed the rebirth of this genre, that it was invaded in late 70s and early 80s with Punk and New Wave.
And precisely IQ is our band for this comment. This great band that birth in the 80s, with 25 years on the road give us another outstanding work, with no doubt, it was the most eagerly awaited in this 2009, and it will had a favourable impact in this so valid Movement.
Without the extraordinary direction of Martin Orford (former keyboard), this cd had the presence of their new drummer Andy Edwards (former Robert Plant band), and a great work in keyboards of Mark Westworth (former Darwin's Radio and Grey Lady Down), And the rest of the band: the voice of Peter Nichols, the guitars of Michael Holmes, and the bass of John Jowitt, who offers a superb, impeccable work.
Clean music, well executed, elegant, with an outstanding technical production, that didn't have mistakes. IQ shows his well known job to make excellent music that delight to their fans. (It's convenient to recall that in 2008, this group recorded a double alive album with some melodies and demos, in a limited edition of 1.000 copies and a different cover from the original).
The first song of this album is "Frecuency" (8.29) surprisily, it takes up again, with a brief introduction in sampler, where we can hear the news of the explosion of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima in a row with disonnances that precedes the group's entrance. Pay attention to the chords of the keyboard. It's remits us to "In the court of Crimson King" from King Crimson, with a powerful dark passage that take us to the arpeggios of Holmes’ electric guitar and to the mellotron, going to changes and counterpoints in the rhythmic session, with a clear introduction to the Fusion. This melody ends with a synthesizer, dissonances, and electric guitar. We must say that the structure of this song is perfect.
"Life support" (10.32), is a well traced line going to Genesis, from the beginning, including the voice. Is a well marked influence, and the great voice of Nicholls take us to great quality passages. W continue with a rythm's change with excellent deployment of Edwards on drums, and the long Holmes' scale in the guitar, that preludes to "One fatal mistake" (4.54). Here we have a beautiful ballad that proposes the intimate essence of the group: vocal magnificence, great work in piano and Hammond, and support with the acoustic guitar of Holmes. I think, this song is one of the bests of this album.
We take up again the road with "Ryker skies" (9.45), a song well elaborated in wich a brief prelude that goes into the electric guitar of Holmes and Nicholls' voice, gives entrance to the rest of the group developing a great versatility. For a moment, this voice transmits dramatism, giving a guideline to a change where the Mellotron plays very suggestive paper, giving us sounds like chorus voices, thet continues with the acoustic guitar and the voice. It emphazises Edwards' work in the battery.
"The Province" (13.43),it`s with no doubt, the best song of this work. This suite characterizes with continuos melodic changes, and begins with a brief prelude of acoustic guitar chords and mellotron, and with the incorporation of Nicholls for a light rock, that continues with an acoustic rest, then the mellotron appearing as chorus with the piano and the electric guitar. Almost appears Hammond's sound and continues the mellotron. In the end of this song we can hear extraordinary arpeggios with the electric guitar.
In the end we have "Closer" (8:11). An acoustic guitar prelude, with mellotron, where we have a reprise of piano chords of track 4. A great vocal work of Nicholls and the acoustic guitar, introduces us to a magnifying keyboard that introduces to all the group in the end.
There were almost 5 years since "Dark Matter", their previous record, With this work, this quintet reinvindicate for good the Neoprogressive, as a movement of commendable artistic qualities, excellent lirycs, and, above all, excellent musicians.
In the last let me highlight the work of their new keyboarder, Mark Westworth, and give them an EXCELLENT to this impeccable record.
10 points.

DREAM THEATER - "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" - 2009

Siguiendo, nos regalan The Shattered Fortress (12.49) Quinta y última parte de la saga iniciada con The Glass Prison, del disco “Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence” , continuada por: This Dying Soul (“Train Of Thought”), The Root Of All Evil (“Octavarium”) y Repentance (de “Systematic Chaos”).
Altamente recomendado.

(Translation by Vivi Di Franco) - We can't denay that Dream Theater's boys always fusionated different musical styles on their music.Principally, the sounds of the golden age in traditional progressive rock of the early 70's, in one way, and in the other way structures and shapes directly attached with classic heavy metal. Also a melodic touch, wich made them more accesible than other similar bands.Every new record is a real surprise, something different, but without losing their identity as a group, making always a chance on his disrupted musical evolution."Black Cluds and Silver Linings" is their 10th record, of 75 minutes long, 6 tracks (in its simple edition, because they've also edited a triple record with covers, and another one with the content of the original record without the vocals, and anotherde luxe edition, with 4 cds and a dvd), with complex musical passages and multirhythms, with a generous dosis of harmony and musical melody. This album have the nature of its first records, like "Images and Words" and "Awake" and also had the strong and forcefully of "Systematic Chaos" and "Train of Thought". But basically, the escence of this record is the melody. The voice of James Le Brie, the guitars of John Petrucci, the keyboards of Jordan Rudess, all the percussion kit of Mike Portnoy and the bass of John Myung, reinforce and enhance the melody. They are also overpowering solos, but this are not the central part of the songs, the key is the melody and the musical harmony. In "Black Clouds and Silver Linings", the group drinks of all its musical influences, external and of their own. Sometimes is heavy, sometimes calmed, atmospheric, modern, melodic, classic, epic, and allways technic, very technical.Despite of its many variety, never loses its own soul, from its beginning to its end. From the beginning this record surprise ourselves, with the heaviest riff and death metal elements of "A Nightmare to Remember" (16:10). A great song where the shades given from the beginning, give shape to all the record. Then, we found "A Rite of Passage" (8:36), first single on this record, that includes a video. Its might be part of "Train of Thought" (its heaviest record), or of "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" (its more experimental record). A good song thats no overhangs from the rest but, well done. The more "doom" atmospheres, more climatic ones, are in the next track "Wither" (5:25). This song would overcome a single, It's a ballad that enhances the more melancholicregisters of Le Brie voice, and its also remember the beautiful "Vacant" of "Train of Thought".In the next song, they give us "The Shattered Fortress" (12:49) the 5th and last part of the saga begined with "The Glass Prision" from "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence", that continues with "This Dying Soul" (train of Thought), "The Root of All Evil" (Octavarium), and "Repentance" (Systematic Chaos). This conceptual obra, distributed in five records, was written by Portnoy, and talk about its alcoholic addiction. A hard song that remember us bands as Metallica or Megadeth.A good song, very severe. Its follows a brilliant song written by Portnoy, called "The Best of Times" (13:09), dedicated to its father, died in 2008. In this song they have the exquisit violin of Jerry Goodman(from Mahavishnu Orchestra). A beautiful song, with emotive climates, dynamic changing elements, and a great and emotional solo from Petrucci, to give a great end to this song. And the "strawberry of the cake" is "The Count of Tuscany" (19:16). Almost 20 minutes of musical excellence. With atmospherical passages, agressive parts, changes of rhythm, incredible melodies.wonderfull solos...this song has the word "Progressive" in every note, given the end to this excellent album.Personally, I consider this the most round up of the trilogy that borns in "Octavarium" and continues with "Systematic Chaos"..."Black Clouds and Silver Lining" counts with an amalgam ans unification of developed concepts in previous records of the band, with very elaborated melodies: more direct, less experimental. If you let me give this record a personal clasification, i give it 9/10.Highly recomended.
