Es innegable que los muchachos de Dream Theater siempre se han caracterizado por haber logrado fusionar estilos diferentes en su propuesta musical. Principalmente, los sonidos de la época de oro del rock progresivo tradicional, de inicios de los 70's por un lado, y por otro las estructuras y formas directamente ligadas con el metal clásico y contemporáneo. Además, incluyendo un toque melódico que sin duda los hace más accesibles con respecto otras bandas similares. Cada nuevo disco es una verdadera sorpresa, algo diferente, pero eso sí, no pierden la identidad que han logrado conseguir como grupo, dando siempre una vuelta de tuerca en su evolución musical ininterrumpida.
“Black Clouds & Silver Linings” es su décima placa de estudio, con más de 75 minutos de duración, 6 tracks (en su edición simple, ya que además fue editada una edición triple, con un disco de covers, y otro con el contenido del disco original, sin sus partes vocales, y otra edición de luxe, de 4 cd’s, con DVD incluido), donde abundan intrincados pasajes musicales y polirritmias, con una generosa dosis de armonía y melodía musical. El álbum cuenta con la naturaleza de sus primeros discos como "Images And Words" o "Awake", y también tiene la fuerza y la contundencia de "Systematic Chaos" y "Train Of Thought”. Pero básicamente la esencia del disco es la melodía. Todo va a favor de reforzarla y destacarla, con la voz de James La Brie, la guitarra de John Petrucci, los teclados de Jordan Rudess, todo el kit percusivo de Mike Portnoy y el bajo de John Myung, quienes están para jugar a favor del conjunto. No dejan aparte los solos, que siguen siendo apabullantes, pero no son la parte central de los temas, la clave es el conjunto, la melodía y la armonía musical.En “Black Clouds & Silver Linings”, el grupo bebe de todas sus influencias musicales, tanto externas como propias. Por momentos es heavy, otras veces es calmado, atmosférico, moderno, melódico, clásico, épico y siempre técnico, muy técnico. A pesar de tanta variedad, nunca pierde un alma propia que lo acompaña de principio a fin. Desde el comienzo, el disco nos sorprende:, como el riff pesadísimo y elementos death metal en A Nightmare to Remember (16.10). Un gran tema, donde los matices dados desde el inicio, dan forma a lo que será el resto del disco.
Luego, nos encontramos con A Rite of Passage (8.36), primer single del disco, con video incluido que bien podría haber sido parte de “Train of Thought” (su disco mas heavy) o en “Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence” (su disco mas experimental). Una buena canción, que no sobresale al resto, pero de buena factura.
Las atmósferas más “doom” , más climáticas del álbum, se muestran en el siguiente track, Wither (5.25). Este tema bien podría convertirse en single, ya que se trata de una balada en donde se destacan los registros más melancólicos de la voz de La Brie, y que en algo remite a la bella Vacant, del álbum “Train Of Thought”.
Siguiendo, nos regalan The Shattered Fortress (12.49) Quinta y última parte de la saga iniciada con The Glass Prison, del disco “Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence” , continuada por: This Dying Soul (“Train Of Thought”), The Root Of All Evil (“Octavarium”) y Repentance (de “Systematic Chaos”). Esta obra conceptual repartida en 5 discos, fue escrita por Portnoy, y trata acerca de su adicción al alcohol, de la ya se entiende esta recuperado…. Una pieza dura, que nos remite a bandas tales como Metallica, o Megadeth. Un buen tema, muy contundente.
A continuación, tenemos un tema genial, escrito también por Portnoy llamado The Best of Times (13.09), dedicado a su padre, fallecido en 2008. En este tema, cuentan con el exquisito violín del maestro Jerry Goodman (de la Mahavishnu Orchestra, entre otros proyectos). Una hermosa pieza, con climas conmovedores, elementos cambiantes, dinámicos, y un gran y emocionante solo de Petrucci para enmarcar un gran final a una gran canción.
Y la “gran frutilla del postre”, lleva por nombre The Count of Tuscany. (19.16),Casi 20 minutos de excelencia musical, que pasa por pasajes atmosféricos, por partes agresivas, cambios de ritmo, increíbles melodías, solos maravillosos… vaya que este tema lleva escrito el rótulo“Progresivo” por donde se lo escuche, dando fin, a este excelente album.
En lo personal, considero al disco más redondo de la trilogía que nace en “Octavarium” y continúa en “Systematic Chaos”.
“Black Clouds & Silver Linings”, cuenta con una amalgama y unificación de conceptos ya desarrollados en anteriores entregas de la banda, con melodías más elaboradas: más directas, menos experimentales.
Si me permiten una calificación personal, le doy un 9/10. Altamente recomendado.

Also a melodic touch, wich made them more accesible than other similar bands.Every new record is a real surprise, something different, but without losing their identity as a group, making always a chance on his disrupted musical evolution."Black Cluds and Silver Linings" is their 10th record, of 75 minutes long, 6 tracks (in its simple edition, because they've also edited a triple record with covers, and another one with the content of the original record without the vocals, and anotherde luxe edition, with 4 cds and a dvd), with complex musical passages and multirhythms, with a generous dosis of harmony and musical melody.This album have the nature of its first records, like "Images and Words" and "Awake" and also had the strong and forcefully of "Systematic Chaos" and "Train of Thought". But basically, the escence of this record is the melody. The voice of James Le Brie, the guitars of John Petrucci,the keyboards of Jordan Rudess, all the percussion kit of Mike Portnoy and the bass of John Myung, reinforce and enhance the melody. They are also overpowering solos, but this are not the central part of the songs, the key is the melody and the musical harmony.In "Black Clouds and Silver Linings", the group drinks of all its musical influences, external and of their own. Sometimes is heavy, sometimes calmed, atmospheric, modern, melodic, classic, epic, and allways technic, very technical.Despite of its many variety, never loses its own soul, from its beginning to its end.From the beginning this record surprise ourselves, with the heaviest riff and death metal elements of "A Nightmare to Remember" (16:10). A great song where the shades given from the beginning, give shape to all the record.Then, we found "A Rite of Passage" (8:36), first single on this record, that includes a video. Its might be part of "Train of Thought" (its heaviest record), or of "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" (its more experimental record). A good song thats no overhangs from the rest but, well done.The more "doom" atmospheres, more climatic ones, are in the next track "Wither" (5:25). This song would overcome a single, It's a ballad that enhances the more melancholicregisters of Le Brie voice, and its also remember the beautiful "Vacant" of "Train of Thought".In the next song, they give us "The Shattered Fortress" (12:49) the 5th and last part of the saga begined with "The Glass Prision" from "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence", that continues with "This Dying Soul" (train of Thought), "The Root of All Evil" (Octavarium), and "Repentance" (Systematic Chaos). This conceptual obra, distributed in five records, was written by Portnoy, and talk about its alcoholic addiction. A hard song that remember us bands as Metallica or Megadeth.A good song, very severe.Its follows a brilliant song written by Portnoy, called "The Best of Times" (13:09), dedicated to its father, died in 2008. In this song they have the exquisit violin of Jerry Goodman(from Mahavishnu Orchestra). A beautiful song, with emotive climates, dynamic changing elements, and a great and emotional solo from Petrucci, to give a great end to this song.And the "strawberry of the cake" is "The Count of Tuscany" (19:16). Almost 20 minutes of musical excellence. With atmospherical passages, agressive parts, changes of rhythm, incredible melodies.wonderfull solos...this song has the word "Progressive" in every note, given the end to this excellent album.Personally, I consider this the most round up of the trilogy that borns in "Octavarium" and continues with "Systematic Chaos"..."Black Clouds and Silver Lining" counts with an amalgam ans unification of developed concepts in previous records of the band, with very elaborated melodies: more direct, less experimental.If you let me give this record a personal clasification, i give it 9/10.Highly recomended.
